W and I have been working on the times tables all year and have worked our way up to the 5's and 6's. (Of course he could count by 5's when he was 5 but I wanted him to say 5x6 is 30, without hesitation.) So here's how part of our quizzing went today.
Me: "What is 6x3?"
W: "5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18. It's 18."
He was using his fingers so I quickly realized he was counting by 5's and then just adding the extra 3 to get the answer. I thought it was hilarious and wonderful. I love the way he thinks. I love that he gets that numbers can be broken apart and that there's more than one way to find the answer. I love that he knew 6x3 is the same thing as 5x3+3.
I especially love not worrying about him struggling with math all his life like I have. I love it!
That's awesome penny! I love the way he figured that out!
