Science Class at Red Lobster

This is a post I wrote in November 2006 on another blog. At that time W was in 1st grade and J was doing preschool work. It made me laugh so I decided to republish it here!

One of the most wonderful things about homeschooling is that all the world becomes your school. I may spend 2 hours a day at the table with books and worksheets and flashcards and color pages and such but we do school all day everyday.

For instance, for the past few days or so we've been talking a lot about insects, what do they have in common (they all have 6 legs, most have wings and antennae), what are the parts of their body called (head, thorax, abdomen), and where is their skeleton and what do you call it (skeleton on the outside of the body, called an exoskeleton). And so it seemed perfectly natural when my husband ordered lobster for dinner tonight that I would point out the similarities between insects and the crustacean sitting on his plate. They both have exoskeletons, "See kids how the meat is on the inside and the skeleton is on the outside, just like bugs, remember?" They both have segmented bodies. "See how the body is in different segments like a bug. What are the parts of a bugs body called?" And then the clincher, "Look kids it even has antennae just like bugs do."

My husband almost threw up and assured me he would never enjoy lobster again. I really felt bad. I didn't mean to ruin his dinner, but I couldn't pass up the hands on "teachable moment." I was also sure to let him know our science class at Red Lobster and his reaction to it was going to be the subject of this post!

Anyway, have a great day, grace and peace to you!
