thoughts on my authentic self

Judy Garland once said,
"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else."
When I ponder those words I find myself asking the questions, "How well do I really know myself?" and "How well do I like the self I know?".
I think my authentic self must be a combination of who I am most of the time and who I am striving to be - my best self. Some days I find myself quite ambitious about being the best me possible, but I think I have at least as many days when I am lazy.
I usually don't have to worry about being a second-rate version of somebody else, my worry is being a second-rate version of myself.
